Thoughts and Writings

Writing is an artistic passion of mine, particularly ideas and stories of life, mental health, and art. I am including some current thoughts about these subjects.

Meet the Artist

Rachel Cox is a nature-loving artist. Growing up in Utah, nestled right in between the mountains and the Great Salt Lake, Rachel has a special love for beautiful landscapes. She uses a variety of different techniques and subjects to create her artwork and loves to learn.

Rachel is particularly passionate about mental health and how it impacts creativity, seeing over time that her bipolar disorder directly impacts the way that she creates art. Advocacy and awareness for mental illnesses is very important to her and she tries to utilize those interests and advocacy in her art.

When she is not at her easel, Rachel loves laying in the sun, watching The Lord of the Rings, writing on her computer, going on barefoot walks, spending quality time with loved ones, and making flower crowns from wildflowers.

Inspiration

I am very lucky to have a talented sister, Bethany, who captures beautiful scenes that I enjoy using as reference photos for my paintings. Many of my pieces of art come straight from looking at her photos. She captures light and life in such a beautiful and effortless way, and it is special to be able to create something based on the art and vision of someone that I love.

Beth especially loves photographing landscapes, plants, animals, and the people she loves. Aside from taking pictures, Beth enjoys reading, napping, exploring, spending time with her friends and family, and going on drives. Fun fact: over half of her photos are taken from the passenger seat of a moving car.

Along with Beth’s beautiful photography, the world around me contributes to what inspires me to create art. I see the reflection of fluffy clouds over the lake near my home and can only think of the different brush strokes that I would use to produce a specific cloudy perspective piece. I see colors and lines on top of otherwise grey and simple rocks and am instantly able to fabricate a plan of how to capture the texture and shadows.

Painting other subjects that I love brings me joy. Movies that I love, people that I adore, and ideas directly from my brain that are brought to life will always be sources of inspiration. Inspiration strikes at random times, and I often feel starved to finish a piece reflecting that. I am grateful for the inspiration that I am surrounded by.
